What are the Four Main Pillars of Umrah?

Published By: Yasir Javid on October 29, 2026

The pillars of Umrah are the essential acts that form the main part of the pilgrimage. A pilgrim must complete these acts as required for the Umrah to be valid. They include entering Ihram with the intention of Umrah, performing Tawaf, completing Sa’i and finishing with Halq or Taqsir.

Pillars should not be confused with Sunnahs or recommended acts. A missed Sunnah does not have the same effect as missing an essential part of Umrah.

4 Main Pillars of Umrah

Umrah consists of four pillars and each one has an important role in completing the pilgrimage. Umrah is not complete without performing the following pillars:

1. Ihram and Intention

Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before performing Umrah. A person intending to perform Umrah must make the intention and enter Ihram before crossing the Miqat assigned to their travel route.

After entering Ihram, pilgrims must follow the rules and restrictions associated with this state. They then recite the Talbiyah and continue toward Makkah to perform Umrah.

2. Tawaf Around the Kaaba

Tawaf is performed by walking around the Kaaba seven times. The pilgrim starts every round from the direction of the Black Stone and keeps the Kaaba on the left side while walking.

Pilgrims should complete all seven rounds carefully. Tawaf is an essential part of Umrah so pilgrims should learn its basic rules before beginning.

3. Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah

After Tawaf, pilgrims perform Sa’i between Safa and Marwah. It consists of seven rounds between the two hills which begin at Safa and end at Marwah.

Sa’i remembers the effort of Hajar (A.S) as she searched for water for her son Ismail (A.S). Pilgrims complete this act by following the marked path between Safa and Marwah.

4. Halq or Taqsir

After completing Sa’i, the pilgrim performs Halq or Taqsir. Halq means shaving the head while Taqsir means shortening the hair. Men may shave their heads or shorten their hair.

Shaving is generally considered more virtuous. Women do not shave their heads instead they trim a small amount of their hair. This step marks the completion of Umrah and allows the pilgrim to leave the state of Ihram.

Common Mistakes During the Pillars of Umrah

Pilgrims may make mistakes because of confusion, crowds or a lack of preparation. Some common mistakes to avoid include:

  • Crossing the Miqat without entering Ihram.
  • Incorrectly counting the rounds of Tawaf.
  • Incorrectly counting the trips of Sa’i.
  • Leaving Ihram before completing Halq or Taqsir.

Learning the basic steps of Umrah before traveling can help prevent these mistakes. If a pilgrim makes a mistake during Umrah, they should ask a qualified scholar about their specific situation.

Final Words

The pillars of Umrah guide pilgrims through any essential stage of the pilgrimage. Understanding Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i and Halq or Taqsir can help pilgrims to complete their Umrah in the correct order. Proper preparation also makes it easier to avoid common mistakes and perform every step with confidence.
